Islands and Protected Areas of the Gulf of California, Mexico
Islands and Protected Areas of the Gulf of California, Mexico: The Islands and Protected Areas of the Gulf of California site in Mexico was inscribed on the World Heritage List in 2005. The site is important for its diversity of oceanographic processes, including wind- and current-driven upwelling, tidal mixing, and hydrothermal vents - all of which contribute to its extraordinary biological diversity. There are 890 fish species (90 of which occur nowhere else), 34 kinds of whales and dolphins, 25 species of coral, over 4,800 invertebrates, the poisonous yellow-bellied sea snake, and 90% of the world’s Heermann's gulls.

Australia's 1.2 Million Mile Marine Reserve: In November 2012, Australia began protecting a huge swath of its ocean from overfishing and oil exploration, creating the largest network of marine reserves in the world at a grand total of 1.2 million square miles (3.1 million square kilometers). The area, a third of the continent’s territorial waters, includes an underwater canyon as large as the U.S. Grand Canyon, seagrass meadows, and the biodiverse reefs of the Coral Sea, including the one pictured here at Montague Island.
Belize Barrier Reef Reserve System
Belize Barrier Reef Reserve System: The Belize Barrier Reef Reserve System site in Belize was inscribed on the World Heritage List in 1996. The site is an outstanding natural system, consisting of the largest barrier reef in the northern hemisphere, offshore atolls, and several hundred sand cays, mangrove forests, coastal lagoons, and estuaries. The system's seven sites illustrate the evolutionary history of reef development and are a significant habitat for threatened species, including marine turtles, manatees, and the American marine crocodile.

C'est quoi les opérations ? - vidéo Dailymotion: La raison d’être de Médecins sans frontières, c’est d’apporter une assistance médicale aux populations en danger. le département baptisé « opérations » est dédié au soutien quasi quotidien des actions de terrain dans 70 pays. Les équipes de terrain identifient les problématiques des pays dans lesquels elles interviennent, du type conflit ou épidémie… et proposent au siege d’organiser une réponse.Une discussion s’engage alors avec le siege, pour determiner si MSF doit intervenir et comment, en fonction notamment de ses moyens et de son savoir-faire… L’identité de MSF, ce sont d’abord les actions d’urgence. Mais elle intervient de plus en plus sur des activités de moyen à long terme, comme la prise en charge du sida et de la tuberculose.Cet engagement est crucial pour les centaines de milliers de malades du Sida suivi par MSF : leur survie dépend de la prise quotidienne de médicaments, tout au long de leur vie.Dans tous ces domaines d’intervention, l’ONG essaie de mettre en place des standards de soins de qualité. Au siège, les équipes du département des opérations, divisées en desk, suivent pas à pas le déroulement des actions de terrain.Un élément important du travail du département des opérations, c’est la gestion du risque sécuritaire. Un risque qui ne peut jamais être complètement écarté.Certains paramètres permettent à MSF de mesurer la nature et l’immédiateté d’un risque… Que ce soit pour des questions de sécurité ou non, il faut à un moment fermer des missions, quitter des pays… Une décision difficile à prendre…Et puis il y a les critères subjectifs…Le rôle du département des opérations, ici, est d’aider à faire la part des choses…
